Educating the salt fields kids
Our group of supporters pay the salary of Penh, the teacher who looks after the pre-school children on the salt fields (pictured above, left) Her challenge is to bring the students up to basic Khmer literacy so that when they begin at the state school they are not behind the others.
Life on the salt fields is harsh, being exposed to the full sun on cloudless days. It is a precarious existence, paying little and is seasonal. If it rains in the dry season, a week's work can be lost. Children can earn money harvesting so parents have to be encouraged to keep their children at school.
